Family in courtyard
Marrakech-Medina

In the medina, or old city, of Marrakech, we find the Ben Omar family. Mohammed is on the left; his father in the middle; his mother on the right. His youngest sister and uncle Abdelaziz fill out the image. They stand along the side of their courtyard. Mohammed has five other brothers and sisters.

Mohammed's father is an elderly man who has made the pilgrimage, or hajj, to Mecca, the spiritual heart of Islam. For that reason, he is aDDressed in the honorific form, "Haj." He typically wears a small yellow cap or wears a yellow scarf that indicates that he is a hajji. On this day, Haj has just entered the house, and so he has his overgarment, or djellaba, still on. So, too, Mohammed's mother, Lalla Hajja ("Mrs. Haj") has just come in from the street outside, and she still has her djellaba on, but has pulled down her veil. Mohammed dresses in western style, wearing ready-made clothes.
