In the commercial district of the old city, or medina, of Marrakech, we have come to an enclosed part of the sprawling market, or suq. This section of the suq specializes in clothing, and so we see the individual shops displaying examples of their wares outside their shops. Individual shops are arrayed in a row on the left and right. Their size is small, more like stalls its seems to us at first. But the amount of merchandise within them may surprise us if we look!
-How is this shopping area like a mall? How is it not? The fact that this area is specialized in clothing and cloth is also interesting; we would find, if we continue our walk through the Semmarine, as this big suq is called, that there is an unfolding spatial specialization and segretation of sellers and their wares. Clothing shops flow like a trail to shops specializing in notions--thread and buttons, which is in turn adjacent to the wool market, the basic raw material of at least some of the cloth and clothing. Clothing makers -tailors- are clustered nearby. The relation of craft to craft object in space is close. |
