			It was here, in the Big Hole Valley, that Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce tribe were finally defeated by the cavalry. After being ambushed in the night and fighting all day, Chief Joseph made his memorable statement: "From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever". Nez Perce National Historical Park now strings together a series of sites along the four month trail the Nez Perce took, fighting as they retreated towards Canada.
