Northern California - Yuba and Feather Rivers

Until the 1970's practically every prominent mountaintop in the national forests of the west was crowned with a fire lookout. The firewatchers would report smoke of possible forest fires, and multiple reports would allow triangulation to determine the exact location. But now these duties are performed by aircraaft and most fire towers are closed. This lookout perches vertiginously on the Sierra Buttes near Downieville.
