Wigwam Motel
Flagstaff, Arizona (1987)
Along old Route 66, the "Mother Road," the Wigwam Motel, long abandoned but still extant along the large freeway that replaced the epic 66, is an indication of how fashions and visions of the West have changed, at least for some. Who today would construct this sort of signature architecture, and who would stay in it, given the rigors of political correctness. But there can be little doubt that, in the prime of the road (its last section was bypassed in 1990), this would have been a memorable site for kids, if still less than enthusiastically greeted by the many Indian peoples who are nearby.
